Intro to Tea Ceremony CD  ::

For the final project in Professor Kimiko Gunji's tea ceremony class, each student was asked to design an invitation to tea ceremony which explained the main concepts of tea ceremony and what they should expect when they arrive.

For my project, I created an invitation with a CD insert. The design of the presentation reflects japanese aesthetics concepts of space and the elegant simplicity of the tea room. The tea room is sparsely decorated, but each element is carefully placed to enhance the entire ceremony.

Maybe even more important than the visual design is the process I went through as I created it. Japanese aesthetics stresses a sensitivity to everything around us. An object will give clues to where it should be placed. It is my responsiblity as a designer to recognize this. As I selected paper, music, and photographs for the project, I let them be where they wanted to be and nothing was forced. Many times I will try to force my design to look or be a particular way. In every case that I am flexible and sensitive to my materials, the result is always better than my initial vision. This project is no exception.
