NCSA releases ACCESS, a scientific research magazine, 3 times a year that highlights work scientists are doing on NCSA supercomputers. The Public Affairs group, where I work, is always looking for ways to improve the magazine and tell the stories in more interesting ways. Last year, we started doing 1 infographic story in each magazine. These stories are characterized by shorter text and more dominate imagery that don't simply illustrate, but help tell the story in a visual manner.
With a lot of design work it isn't always necessary for the images to communicate one specific idea in an objective manner. The imagery will enhance, in a more subjective way, the text of the article. But, with these infographics, the images are key to the storytelling process. So on top of making something that looks good, I have to make sure the images are communicating to the audience the real meaning of each story.
